Probiotic Foods

Learn about Probiotic Foods.
probiotic foods

Eating probiotic foods is a great way to promote healthy intestinal flora, reduce digestive problems and support any detox program.

The term probiotic is reserved for those microorganisms that can prove, once ingested in adequate amounts, to exercise beneficial functions for the organism. This restricts probiotics to products that contain live microorganisms, improve health and well being of humans or animals and can affect host mucosa surfaces including the mouth and gastrointestinal tract, the upper respiratory tract and the urogenital tract.

Probiotic foods must contain, in sufficiently large number (at least a million units per gram), live and active probiotic microorganisms able to reach the intestine, multiply and provide a competitive balance on the intestinal microflora.

These foods also promote and improve the body's physiological balance functions through a set of additional effects compared with normal nutritional activities.

It is not just yogurt companies that are cashingin on the probiotic trend. Indeed, a whole segment of the food industry is seeking to incorporate probiotics into foods.
From cereals containing Lactobacillus cultures to chocolate wellness bars containing over five times the live active cultures of the yogurt.
Probiotics are generally mixtures of microorganisms mainly added to yogurt, fermented milk and cheese, but also some fortified foods like ice cream, spreadable products and meat products.

The most important aspect of these foods is the ability of probiotic bacteria to survive and stay in in their packaging good enough until the time of consumption.

The survival of these bacteria to technological processes, the stages of formulation, preparation and storage, is in fact the limiting factor for the development of probiotic products.

Commercially, it is accepted that at the time of consumption, the probiotic products should have a concentration of 106 viable cells per gram for a total consumption for each product of 108-109 cells.
