Fresh pears are delicious eaten. Their skin provides some of their fiber, so it is best to not peel the fruit but eat the entire pear.

The pear also has a good sodium/potassium ratio to help prevent strokes and control high blood pressure in sodium-sensitive individuals.

I suggest you to buy organic pears raised without pesticides or chemical fertilizers; the USDA's own tests show that most non-organic produce contain residual pesticides even after washing.

There are many varieties of pears sold. Bartlett and Cornice pears are soft, juicy, and sweet. They are also very fragile. Bosc and D'Anjou are firmer, but still very sweet and juicy.

Pears are at their best when perfectly ripe and when the flash around the stem gives to gentle pressure.
