Kidney Stones are formed by the precipitation of a series of solutions of mineral salts in the urine.
The most common causes are: the abuse of alcohol, coffee, carbonated drinks, a diet with too much protein or very rich in refined carbohydrates.

The factors that determine the organic loss of calcium are a deficiency in vitamin D, needed for calcium absorption, stress that extracts minerals from the bones by promoting the excretion of calcium, and a diet low in protein, necessary for the production of albumin, essential for the retention of calcium.

Vitamin B6 and magnesium prevents the formation of new stones.
The daily intake of sodium should not exceed 2500 mg.
The daily dose of protein should range from 65 to 70 g. while that of calcium should not be less than 650-800 mg daily.
If you have already had some stones or if there are other cases in your family, avoid foods that contain high amounts of L-cystine.
A diet containing insufficient amounts of potassium (common in diets high in refined carbohydrates), too much salt and not enough fruits and vegetables, making the urine too alkaline, prevent minerals to remain in solution with subsequent storage in the form of stones.
An alkaline diets may help prevent the formation of calcium stones and it can be considered a home remedy for kidney stones.

It is recommended to drink at least a liter of water every day.
Animal protein should be reduced (the men who consume large amounts of animal protein is two times more prone to formation of gallstones) and should instead increase the consumption of vegetables, all whole grains and legumes.
