Benefits of Spirulina
Learn about benefits of Spirulina.

The unicellular Spirulina is a dark green alga with an elongated shape (not exceeding half a millimeter).
Spirulina is one of the oldest forms of life. This primeval nutrition has been growing on earth for 3.5 billion years. It can only live in extremely alkaline water (pH approximately 9-11, drinking water has a pH of 7). It grows wild in Lake Chad and Lake Nakuru in Africa and in Lake Texcoco in Mexico; it is not actually a marine algae.
The natural plant pigments that give Spirulina its distinct color also provide numerous health benefits. These include chlorophyll (green), which helps cleanse the body of toxins, beta carotene (orange), a potent antioxidant, and phycocyanin (blue), which supports protein absorption and healthy immune function.
Spirulina is particularly rich in protein, essential amino acids and lipids. The fat contained in it can normalize blood cholesterol levels, participate in the formation of myelin sheaths that cover nerves and improve immune system function.
The combination of carotenoids, ascorbic acid and tocopherol, gives the Spirulina antioxidant properties. Thanks to these features the alga Spirulina can protect against free radicals and the damage that they cause (premature aging, neurodegenerative disorders, certain cancers and atherosclerotic disease).
Spirulina beta carotene is ten times more concentrated than carrots. So even if you don't eat the recommended 4 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables every day (most people eat only 1-2, including French fries), get your natural beta carotene insurance from spirulina to help support your body's defenses.
The use of Spirulina food is very old, it seems to date back to Roman times. This alga was also present in the diet of pre-Columbian civilizations.
Today, spirulina supplements are very popular among sportsmen and between those who want to quickly reach anideal weight.
In the first case, the high content of biotin and ferridossine inhibits the formation of lactic acid during a particularly intense muscular effort (detoxifying action). Sportsmen can also take advantage of the excellent supply of vitamins and its valuable antioxidant properties (physical activity, while enhancing the endogenous disposal systems, produces many free radicals).
The high protein content (65-70 grams per 100g of food), makes Spirulina a useful and nutritious food for the sedentary population. Good amino acid profile, can be a valuable aid to cover the needs for essential amino acids in people who follow a strict vegetarian diet (vegan).
Spirulina also appears to have some effect on appetite control. When taken before meals it accelerates the satiety (probably thanks to the abundance of nutrients).
Regular use of Spirulina also helps the intestine; it destroys harmful bacteria, such as Candida, and stimulates growth of intestinal flora (important for proper assimilation of nutrients contained in food and to protect against infection).
The recommended dose is 10 grams per day to enjoy the benefits of spirulina, an amount apparently small, but able to cover alone, much of the daily requirements of many nutrients such as vitamin A and iron.
Because of these positive features, Spirulina has earned the nickname of "food of the future."
Spirulina can be used at all ages, from children to elderly people. Its use is recommended in pregnancy and during the period of feeding for the vitamins, minerals and protein it provides.
So if you need a good supplement, I recommend you try this small and precious alga.
