The grapefruit is a subtropical citrus tree known for its bitter fruit that has only become popular from the late 19th century.

Grapefruit is a good source of nutrients that contribute to a healthy diet, such as vitamin C, pectin fiber, and the beneficial antioxidant lycopene.
Studies have shown grapefruit helps lower cholesterol and there is evidence that the seeds have high levels of antioxidant properties, keeping arteries clean, and lowering insulin in the body .

Grapefruit has an alkaline reaction after digestion. A flavonoid called "naringenin," is a naturally occurring alkaline compound in all citrus fruit, but especially in grapefruit, giving it its characteristic bitter taste. Naringenin, found naturally in grapefruit, detoxes the liver and causes fat to be released instead of storing it, according to a study by Roberts Research Institute at the University of Western Ontario.

Additionally, the citric acid of the fruit is oxidized in the human system and increasing the alkalinity of the blood. Consequently, its juice is beneficial to prevent acidity and various diseases caused by too much acid in the system.

The fruit can also help in relieving constipation.Half a grapefruit provides six grams of fibers. That's about a quarter of the amount health authorities recommend. As with most fruits, roughly half of grapefruit's fiber is insoluble (which helps prevent constipation and which may reduce the risk of colon cancer) and half is soluble (which helps lower cholesterol levels).

The cellulose, sugar, and organic acid in grapes make them a laxative food. Grapes also tone up the stomach and intestines and relieve the most chronic constipation. One should take at least 350 gm of this Grape fruit daily to achieve the freedom from Constipation.

This amazing fruit is also beneficial in maintaining the health of intestines and it is considered as a preventive food against dysentery, diarrhea, enteritis, and other infective diseases of the digestive tract.

Grapefruit , especially in the red and pink varieties,is also considered a super diet food for weight loss.

One of the most popular diets is the "12day Grapefruit Diet"

In the simple terms, there is an ingredient in this fruit that if ingested with meals helps to burn fat and thereby to lose weight.

Basically, with the 12day Grapefruit Diet you lose weight by removing fluids and fat from the body.
The diet is prescribed on a base period, consisting of 12 days of diet and two days of rest, where it is allowed to eat anything.
The period is repeatable until reaching the desired weight (whatever it is!).

Most versions of the 12day Grapefruit Diet promises a weight loss of 5 kg. within 12 days.

The diet (also known as Mayo diet) probably dates back to 1940, and over the years has undergone various changes.
The latest version includes three main food, grapefruit, meat and eggs, but nothing more.

In fact, the12day Grapefruit Diet is very monotonous, because it provides a classic breakfast-lunch-dinner program, in which the only foods that appear are grapefruit (or grapefruit juice), eggs, meat (cooked ) and bacon (for breakfast). Salads are permitted, with the exception of some vegetables and potatoes. All cereals, bread and vegetables are not allowed.

Fats, in addition to those contained in food, are allowed in the salad .

It is easy to argue that this is a high protein diet that does not require fixed portions; indeed you should eat without limit, until you feel satiated!

An example of this diet program includes:

  • Breakfast:
  • 2 eggs, 2 pieces of bacon, coffee , 1 / 2 grapefruit or 1 glass of grapefruit juice.

  • Lunch:
  • Salad, meat a desire, 1 / 2 grapefruit or 1 glass of grapefruit juice.

  • Dinner:
  • Red or green vegetables (except starchy vegetables), meat or fish on demand and 1 / 2 grapefruit or 1 glass of grapefruit juice.

  • Snack before bedtime:
  • A glass of skim milk.

In this diet you can use all the butter you want, even fried foods are allowed.
The grapefruit should not be sweetened.

Additionally you must drink at least 2 liters of water a day.

The 12day Grapefruit Diet is not a myth.
That's what a new study by the Nutrition and Metabolic Research Center at Scripps Clinic confirmed. Researchers there found that the simple act of adding grapefruit and grapefruit juice to one's diet can result in weight loss.

The study was done over a period of 12 weeks, by Dr. Ken Fujioka that examined the weight and secretions of insulin in 100 men and women who participated in this study.
Participants who ate half a grapefruit with each meal lost 3.6 pounds, while those who drank a serving of grapefruit juice three times a day lost 3.3 pounds. Many patients in the study lost more than 10 pounds.

Warning:certain pharmaceutical drugs combined with grapefruit juice become more potent, so some individuals must be careful before incorporating grapefruit into their diet regimes.
Compounds in grapefruit juice slow the normal detoxification and metabolism processes in the intestines and liver, which hinders the body’s ability to breakdown and eliminate these drugs. Individuals using medication such as Zocor, Lipitor, Pravachol, Mevacor, Crestor, and Lescol and even users of Viagra, should avoid the 12day Grapefruit Diet
